Kalam plans big solar plant
P. Sunderarajan
HYDERABAD:
A five-MW solar plant will be set up in the Rashtrapati Bhavan will by the year-end, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said on Thursday.
It will be Asia's largest solar power plant.
Mr. Kalam was speaking at the 93rd session of the Indian Science Congress here.
Emphasising the need to tap solar energy to bridge the demand-supply gap in the power sector, he said scientists would have to conduct research to increase the efficiency of solar cells at the earliest so that solar energy became more competitive.
At present, only kilowatt level solar plants were available in the country.
"Scientists have to take up the challenge of increasing solar cell efficiency from 15 to 45 per cent. Research is essential using CNT plus silicon voltaic cells, which will make the establishment of solar power plants competitive."
