CHENNAI: Saxophone exponent Kadri Gopalnath and vocalists C. Saroja and C. Lalitha (popularly known as the Bombay sisters) were felicitated by the Padma Sarangapani Cultural Academy on Monday for "igniting the spirit of Carnatic music across frontiers, languages and ideologies." They were presented the Padma Sadhana awards by Justice N.V. Balasubramaniam, retired judge, Madras High Court, during the inauguration of the academy's fourth Music and Dance Festival. While the sisters were fortunate enough to have given their voice to the Srirangam pancharatnas and had propagated the cause of music through the Mukthambaram Trust, Mr. Gopalnath had masterfully integrated the saxophone, an instrument basically used in the lighter realms of Western music, into a highly classical music like Carnatic, V.V. Srivatsa, vice-president, Music Academy, said. V. Jayakrishnan and Priya Jayakrishnan, directors of the Padma Sarangapani Academy and S. Varadan, its chairman, were present at the function. The five-day music and dance festival, which is being held at Virugambakkam, will feature performances of young artists such as Varsha Ramesh, R. Ganesh, S. Sanath Kumar, Sujatha Mohan, R. Giridharan, M. Anusha, K.G. Thulasidoss and Varsha Srivastav.
