Chief Justice open to the idea; keen on forging the varsity-judicial academy link

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is keen on extending the reach of its research department to legal professionals keen on pursuing Ph.D.

University officials have a proposal to allow practising advocates and serving judges, who have the necessary qualification to register in the university and pursue a doctoral degree.

Vice-Chancellor, S.S.P. Dharwesh, told The Hindu on Monday that he discussed the proposal with Chief Justice of Madras High Court A.P. Shah, and he was open to the idea.

The university has a research cell, supervised by a committee. The proposal would be forwarded to various authorities for deciding the final modalities.

The Vice Chancellor said the Chief Justice was keen on forging a strong link between the Law University and the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, which provides training and continuing education to sitting judicial officers.

Mr. Dharwesh, who earlier served as Director of the Academy, said the university wanted to have such linkages. It could provide content to the academy's training courses.

Super speciality courses

The university wants to introduce `super speciality courses' leading to a research-based degree in Master of Civil Law, he said. "We are adding computer facilities for students and providing access to specific websites that provide them updated information on judgments of the Supreme Court and High Courts. We give students practical orientation on court procedures. We simulate the proceedings - how a judge conducts an inquiry, examination or cross examination, because these are practical aspects of law they should know," the Vice Chancellor said.
