Stay away from media, BJP members told

Neena Vyas

MUMBAI: D elegates at the closing session of the five-day BJP conclave here on Friday were warned by leaders to stay away from the media, desist from appearing on television shows or giving interviews to the print media. Only the official spokespersons should speak to the press, they were told.

Party president L.K. Advani said "what makes news is now determined by factors other than what significant development takes place. The print media has failed to adjust to the arrival of the electronic media."

While he did not directly blame the media for the party's ills, Mr. Advani said partymen should not worry about sensational stories carried by the press. "What appears in media is important; [but] it does not reflect the will of the people which becomes apparent only through the ballot box."

Mr. Advani likened journalists to Karna's charioteer Shallya. Partymen should not pay heed to what the print and electronic media said about the organisation.

Senior leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said the media was only interested in "sensationalism and entertainment."
