NEW DELHI: In a bid to facilitate greater community participation in a centrally-sponsored programme, mothers of the 12 crore school children covered under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme will now be allowed to supervise the preparation and serving of the meal. Billed as a "new path-breaking initiative," the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has decided to encourage mothers to come forward and take turns to watch and oversee the preparation and distribution of the meal. Given the large number of students in government and government-aided schools where this programme is implemented, a mother would be required to devote just a couple of hours only once or twice a year. Having taken this decision to involve mothers, States have been asked by the Ministry to launch a campaign to mobilise mothers into participating in this scheme. Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh has requested Chief Ministers to provide personal leadership in this effort.
