10-year RI for raping five-year-old girl

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Additional District Judge of the Magalir Neethimandram, S. Kalavathy, on Wednesday sentenced 21-year-old Sivasankar to undergo ten years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 15,000 on charges of having raped a five-year-old girl. According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped the girl by luring her with a chocolate.

The judge observed "there was an alarming and shocking increase of sexual offences committed on children due to the reason that children are ignorant of the act of rape and are not able to offer resistance. Such offenders are a menace to the civilised society and should be mercilessly punished."

For the offence under section 366 (A) of Indian Penal Code for kidnapping a child, the judge awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. Failure to pay the fines would attract one more year of simple imprisonment each.

Of the Rs. 25,000, the victim should be paid a compensation of Rs. 15,000 after the appeal period. The sentences would run concurrently.
