Corporation holds discussions with consumer bodies

`Interaction after 11 years'

  • Improvements to basic amenities
  • Building rule violations
  • Chaotic parking lots
  • Stagnant sewage in open drainage canals

COIMBATORE: In a surprise move, the Coimbatore Corporation discussed with consumer welfare organisations on Wednesday improvements to basic amenities, dealing with building rule violations and ensuring hygiene in the city.

An office-bearer of one of the organisations said he was puzzled on receiving an invitation from the Corporation (dated December 16, 2005) to the meeting, seeking views on various issues facing the public.

The meeting with consumer organisations was revived after an 11-year gap, he claimed. Though the district administration convening a meeting with these organisations, the Corporation had not discussed infrastructure, its services and their quality with organisations representing the public.

Significantly, the meeting took up the issue of building rule violations and the unauthorised constructions.

The consumer bodies had been assailing the Corporation for allowing such constructions to remain by paying a measly penalty.

They had blamed the parking space shortage across the city on such violations.

The construction of shops and other structures on spaces meant for parking of vehicles had led to chaotic parking lots on roads, especially near shopping complexes.

The representatives and the Corporation officials discussed action that could be taken against property owners who indulged in violations, a press release from the Corporation said.

    Traffic islands

The organisations were said to have expressed resentment over stagnant sewage in open drainage canals, potholes on roads, the dumping of garbage along roads and urged officials to ensure hygiene.

They also called for proper maintenance of traffic islands and bus shelters.
