Coimbatore: The Health Life Expo that began on Thursday at the Ramakrishna Kalyana Mandapam here has stalls that offer a variety of sucrose-free nutrition supplements and healthy food for diabetics, in addition to plenty of suggestions on health care. Stalls displaying fruits and meals have boards indicating the calorie content of each item, which will help the diabetic decide what is best for him.
Calorie content
A normal person requires only 1,200 calories a day, points out V. Sekar, Chief Consultant and Managing Trustee of the Coimbatore Diabetes Foundation. "If you are aware of the calorie content in each food item, it becomes easy to keep your body weight under control," Mr. Sekar says. Organised by the Coimbatore Diabetic Foundation, the expo provides medical and dietary advice to the visitors, in addition to equipment available to check blood glucose level. A stall put up by AMC Cookware demonstrates cooking without using water or oil. This is aimed at ensuring a healthy life for the diabetic.
Footwear selection
Diabetics need to wear Micro Cellular Processed slippers that will prevent them from developing problems in feet. They need to be careful about the kind of footwear they choose, says Subramaniya Sarma, Senior Territory Manager of Eli Lilly and Company.
Exenatide injection
The Company has a stall that gives information on exenatide injection, which reduces the body's resistance to insulin and multiplies beta cell production in pancreas. The drug will be introduced in India in 2007. The Eye Foundation also has a stall that conducts free fundoscopy for the patients. The exhibition provides information on nephrological, urological and ophthalmological complications that could arise due to diabetes.
