KILLED FOR COMMERCE: Protesters from Greenpeace are targeted with water hoses as they try to stop a Japanese ship from transferring a Minke whale in the icy seas of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary off Antarctica, on Wednesday. The campaigners demanded t hat Japan stop its "scientific whaling" programme, which, they said, was only a cover for trade in meat from endangered species. Greenpeace charged that the Fisheries Agency of Japan was hunting Minke and Fin whales, often in protected areas, despite international calls to end the practice.
