Habib retains title

Erode: Asian gold medallist Rafath Habib of Southern Railway Sports Association (Chennai) retained the singles title defeating D. Girish of Coimbatore 80-20, 73-13, 42-56, 32-55, 82-1, 68-10, 72-24, 66-12 in the final of the Chinthamani Memorial open snooker tournament at the S.S. Sports Academy here on Tuesday night.

Habib, who had earlier clinched the doubles title, had a tough first four frames. However, he shook off those initial hiccups to play some brilliant potting.

The Chennai star made breaks of 64 and 52 to win the fifth and sixth frames pretty comfortably. The seventh frame turned out to be tight contest, but the experienced Habib kept his cool and unleashed a wide range of strokes in the final frame to complete a sweet double.

The results (final): Rafath Habib (SRSA, Chennai) bt D. Girish (Coimbatore) 80-20, 73-13, 42-56, 32-55, 82-1, 68-10, 72-24, 66-12. — Sports Reporter
