Sensex drops further

MUMBAI: Correcting further downwards, the Sensex on Thursday plunged by another 71 points in highly volatile trading and closed at 9170.40 on the Bombay Stock Exchange due to sustained heavy sell-off in the form of profit-taking.

The BSE's 30-share sensitive index, which opened firm at 9259.78 against yesterday's close of 9241.76, rose further to the intra-day high of 9298.28. Later, the index plunged by 181.02 points to the intra-day low of 9117.26 but cut the loss to 71.36 points.

Encouraged by heavy foreign institutional investor buying, the Sensex rallied during early trading, but local funds resorted to profit taking as and when the index rose. To some extent, operators and retail investors also made fresh selling.

However, sentiment was strong as FIIs continued to pour in funds as the country's economic growth was encouraging.

The FIIs were net buyers in equities worth Rs. 1,163.90 crore on Tuesday and have pumped in a huge Rs. 2,722 crore so far this month.

Bank shares suffered the most on heavy sell-off. As a result the Bankex that plunged by 124.04 points to 4,941.08. — PTI
