Woman commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A woman allegedly committed suicide in a North-East Delhi area, police sources said on Tuesday.

Maya (22) poured kerosene on herself in her house in Nand Nagri last night and set herself ablaze. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

No suicide note had been found and a magisterial inquiry ordered into the matter.

Meanwhile, the body of a man in his twenties was found with bullet wounds in Adarsh Nagar in north-west Delhi today.

His wife was found missing from their house. Police suspect that she may have an illicit affair and her lover killed her husband.

One held in kidnap case

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of a person from Vaishali district of Bihar and another in West Delhi, police on tuesdasy claimed to have solved a two-year old case of kidnapping-cum-murder of a youth in North-West Delhi.

Sanjay Choudhary was reported missing on December 31, 2003 but investigations had failed to throw up any clues in the case.

During the probe it was found that Choudhary's friend Om Prakash was also missing, police said adding continued efforts provided a lead in October this year tracing Prakash to Kalyan in suburban Mumbai.

Girl raped by

father's friend

NEW DELHI: An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father's friend in a South-West Delhi area, police sources said on Tuesday.

The accused Sikander (22), a labourer, has been arrested.

He had gone to the victim's house in Kapashera area last evening to meet her father and allegedly sexually assaulted her when he found her alone.

The girl's father registered a police case when he came back and Sikander was arrested, the sources said.

Ghalib awards announced

NEW DELHI: The Ghalib awards for Urdu and Persian literature and research were announced on Tuesday by the Ghalib Institute.

While the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Ghalib Award for Urdu research and criticism was given to Fuzail Jafri, the award for Persian research and criticism went to Abdul Wadood Azhar, a statement issued by the Ghalib Institute said.

The awards for Urdu prose and poetry were awarded to Abid Suhail and Akhtar Saeed Khan respectively while the Humsub Ghalib award for Urdu drama went to Yograj Tandon.

Kamal Ahmad Siddiqui was recognised for his contribution for total literary services while Mohd Aslam Pervez was awarded for literary services for popularising science in Urdu.

The awards, instituted in the memory of legendary poet Mirza Ghalib, carry Rs 25,000 in cash each, besides an insignia and a citation, the release said.

Ten more routes finalised

NEW DELHI: With Delhi set to get 200 more high capacity buses by the end of 2006, ten more routes have been finalised on which the modern buses would run in the capital.

Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf on Tuesday chaired a review meeting of the Transport Department, in which it was decided that bidding will be held in January next year for supply of the 200 buses, sources said.

The buses are expected to hit Delhi roads by the end of 2006, the meeting was told.
