Women's Reservation Bill: groups to mount pressure

Two-pronged strategy to influence parliamentarians

NEW DELHI: The Joint Action Front for Women has decided to intensify its campaign to gain support for the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the winter session of Parliament. It will hold dialogues with parliamentarians and their representatives in the respective constituencies.

"We will mobilise women's group across the country to mount pressure on the Government for the enactment of the Bill in this session," said Ranjana Kumari, coordinator of the Front. The Joint Action Front for Women is a group of 70 organisations working on women's issues.

The two-pronged strategy would involve influencing parliamentarians by the voters in their constituencies, and eliciting support of the political parties at the national level. The focus will be on political parties opposing the Bill. The pressure on these will be built through grassroots level organisations, awareness programmes and mass mobilisation.

Ms. Kumari was happy that the Bill was listed for introduction and a Business Advisory Committee set up to review it.
