VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian batting order recovered well after a poor start, and then the bowlers religiously kept their line and length to earn the host a fine 102-run win over South Africa in the inaugural Afro-Asian under-19 cricket tournament at the ACA-VDCA Stadium here on Sunday. The win, marked by a fine all-round show by vice-captain Piyush Chawla, added another six points, including a bonus point, to India's tally and with 12 points the team took the top position on the points table after two rounds of the tournament. Pakistan and Sri Lanka too had easy outings and secured six points each.
Pakistan, Sri Lanka win
Pakistan medium pacer Haseeb Amjjad earned the distinction of recording the first five-wicket haul of the tournament and paved the way for this team's nine-wicket win over Zimbabwe at the Ukku Stadium. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Port Stadium. Sri Lanka is behind India on the points' table with 11 points, while Pakistan logged seven points and South Africa six points. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are yet to open their account. The tournament resumes on Tuesday after a day's rest with India playing Sri Lanka, a match that suddenly turned out to be important for both teams, Zimbabwe facing Bangladesh and Pakistan meeting South Africa. Brief scores: India 253 for six in 50 overs (Debabrata Das 66 n.o., Piyush Chawla 54 n.o., Ravikant Shukla 39, Jaftha Ryan three for 53) bt South Africa 151 in 36.4 overs (Van der Schyff 53, Elgar Den 32, Daniel Pieter 26, Piyush Chawla three for 28). Zimbabwe 118 in 44.4 overs (Samunderu Kudakwasha 31, Haseeb Amjjad five for 15) lost to Pakistan 122 for one in 26.1 overs (Muhammad Fahim 68 n.0.). Bangladesh 175 in 46.5 overs (Tamim Iqbal Khan 42, Mehrab Hossain 37, Shakib al Hasan 27, Shalika Karunanayake four for 26, Rajiva Weerasinghe three for 34) lost to Sri Lanka 178 for two in 32.1 overs (Dimuthu Karunaratne 78, Sameera Soysa 43, Sachitra Serasingha 30).
