Varsity probe reveals `fake candidates'

Mismatch of names in admission list detected: Mumbai police notified of the matter

MADURAI: A preliminary probe conducted by the Madurai Kamaraj University into alleged malpractices at its study centre in Mumbai has revealed that candidates who were not on the "official rolls" in its Directorate of Distance Education had written the examinations with fake enrolment numbers and hall tickets. Following frequent complaints of malpractices involving fake admissions and degree certificates, the MKU authorities had launched a two-day investigation in Mumbai, which brought these irregularities to light.

The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, told The Hindu on Friday that students' admission details available with the university and the study centre did not match.

Dr. Maruthamuthu and a Syndicate member, who conducted the probe at the Mumbai centre, admitted that the malpractices threatened the university's reputation.

Immediate action

Dr. Maruthamuthu said stern action would be immediately taken against those involved. The Mumbai police was also notified of the matter, he added. "Those involved will not be spared. You can see some action in the next two days," the Vice-Chancellor said, adding that staff at the Mumbai centre were being questioned. Meanwhile, university sources said authorities also contemplated enquiry into the possible involvement of staff and whether there was any nexus between them and the Mumbai centre. "When candidates get enrolment numbers, hall-tickets and question papers so easily, involvement of MKU staff has to be probed," a senior official said.

It was alleged that students in the Mumbai centre were being admitted without having proper eligibility and that everything, including fake degree certificates, could be had by paying money.

With the Syndicate meeting scheduled for November 14 and that of the Senate on November 18, authorities said "there will be serious deliberation over the Mumbai issue and a drastic action."
