HYDERABAD: Monica Bedi, the companion of underworld don Abu Salem, was on Saturday remanded to judicial custody till November 25 by a Central Bureau of Investigation court here. She was immediately shifted to the Chanchalguda women's prison. Ms. Bedi was charged under provisions of the Passport Act, 1967, Sections 417 and 420, both relating to cheating, Section 471 for knowingly using forged documents and Section 468 for forgery for the purpose of cheating. She was brought here from Mumbai on Friday night.
Fake passport case
Ms. Bedi was produced before the Special Judge for CBI cases, C.V. Subrahmanyam, around 3 p.m. to execute a non-bailable warrant for failure to appear in a case relating to the possession of a fake passport. The case was registered by the Kurnool police in 2002 but the investigation was subsequently transferred to the CBI. As it was a public holiday, the CBI authorities produced her at the judge's residence. She was taken there in a van with tinted glasses, and police personnel covered her face when she alighted.
Hearing on Tuesday
The CBI sought her custody for five days for completing the investigation. The judge posted the case for hearing on Tuesday, when the defence is expected to file its reply. Ms. Bedi signed papers authorising Abu Salem's legal counsel at Mumbai, Oves Ahmed Siddiqui, to represent her.
