NEW DELHI: Olympic team gold medallist Dong Hyun Im gave a near-flawless performance in quelling comeback man, Bo Ram Kim, 118-112 to win the men's recurve title in the 14th Asian archery championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. Dong missed the world record of 119 by a mere one point. The world record holder, Kyung Mo Park, made a 1-2-3 podium finish for Korea as he defeated Chinese Taipei's Cheng-Wei Kuo 115-111. Dong, who teamed up with Park to win team gold at Athens Olympics, fought a close battle with his team-mate before prevailing 113-112 in the first semifinal. Atlanta Olympic silver medallist, Bo Ram, showed he still had plenty of gas left in the tank. Playing against Kuo, the Korean maintained a steady lead throughout before winning 115-109. In the final, but for Dong's third arrow that landed way outside earning him 8 points, the Korean scored 10s on other 11 arrows. Bo Ram had no match as he shot eight 9s and four 10s. In the women's section, Olympic champion Sung Hyun Park clinched the gold medal beating Ok Hee Yun 110-109 after taking one point lead in the first set of three arrows. Sydney Olympic gold medallist, Mi Jin Yun, won the bronze.

India finally struck gold when Jhanu Hansda defeated Sakro Besra in the women's compound bow final. India took all the semifinal spots in this sectionHaving lost all hopes on Tuesday in the recurve section, an Olympic discipline, Indian men blundered in the compound bow section. India had two archers in the men's semifinal - Naresh Damor and Vivek Kumar - and both failed to get past their opponents.
SAAF launched
Sub-continental archery associations on Wednesday launched South Asian Archery Federation (SAAF) with Vijay Kumar Malhotra, President of the Archery Association of India (AAI), as its president. Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chopal, secretary of the Bangladesh Archery Association, will be Secretary General of the SAAF. The SAAF will hold the inaugural South Asian championship in Dhaka in the second week of February 2006. The results: Men:Recurve:Final: Dong Hyun Im (Kor) bt Bo Ram Kim (Kor) 118-112.
