Police raids in many cities

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: On the basis of intelligence inputs, raids are being conducted in several cities across the country in connection with the serial blasts that rocked the Capital this past Saturday evening. Teams of the Delhi police are also busy cultivating local intelligence in a bid to zero in on the terrorists.

Over the past couple of days raids have been mounted at hotels and guest houses in Bangalore following inputs that the terrorists behind the Delhi blasts might have taken refuge there. Raids have also been conducted at several places in Jharkhand and Bihar. This apart, some teams of the Delhi police have been carrying out searches in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and also in Jammu and Kashmir.

Yet for all that, nearly a week after the blasts that left over 60 people dead and scores injured, the police are yet to make a breakthrough. Over a dozen teams of the Special Cell of the Delhi police, with assistance from Crime Branch officers who are reporting directly to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), are probing different aspects of the three blasts.

Following the release of the computer-generated portraits of the Govindpuri blast suspect, the police have received numerous calls from people claiming that they had information about the suspect.

"Some of them were prank calls. Among the callers were those who wanted to get rid of their tenants or wanted to harass their neighbours," said a police officer.
