NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police sub-inspector who was caught on spy camera by a television news channel allegedly accepting bribe from the family of a young man who had committed suicide on October 21 was placed under suspension on Thursday. Dismissal proceedings have been initiated against him. Thirty four-year-old Himanshu Sharma had committed suicide after the private bank from which he had obtained a loan to buy a motorcycle impounded the vehicle through musclemen after he failed to repay the instalments. After his body reached the mortuary of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Satya Raj, allegedly demanded money from his mother to release his body, threatening to make it a case of murder. Afraid of being framed, the aggrieved family paid the first instalment of Rs. 11,000 to him to get the job done without any problem. The sub-inspector then allegedly demanded Rs. 15,000 more, claiming that he had had to pay the amount to the officials concerned from his own pocket. Himanshu's relatives contacted an English TV news channel, which caught the sub-inspector accepting bribe on its spy camera. After the news was aired, senior police officers placed Satya Raj under suspension and after an inquiry initiated dismissal proceedings against him. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has directed the Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, to submit a factual report in this regard within a week.
