Great but ...

It was a wonderful gesture on the part of Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to have gone to the Income Tax office in Chennai on Monday to file his IT returns. But he could have set a better example had he filed the returns before the last date.

What was Mr. Chidambaram seeking to convey — that people should file their returns on the last day? To have truly led by example, he ought to have filed his returns much earlier and then constantly urged the people to follow his example.

In view of the Government's repeated appeal to the people to file their returns, it would have been better if the Minister had filed his returns without waiting for the last day.

As a result of his eagerness to set an example, many people would have only ended up standing for longer hours in the queue given the heavy security arrangements accompanying a Minister's visit.

P.S. Balasubramaniam,
Chennai

Coming to the Income Tax office on the last day cannot be called leading by example. If anything, the Minister has set a bad precedent. His visit to the IT office would have only created inconvenience to the staff and the public.

Arcot, T.N.
