CENNAI: The educationist, M. Anandakrishnan, on Friday came up with a five-point formula for making professional bodies to recapture "eminence" that they enjoyed in the past. Addressing the annual session of the Tamil Nadu State centre of the Institution of Engineers, Dr. Anandakrishnan, who is also the chairman of the Madras Institute of Development Studies, said several organisations, founded by great personalities with high goals and ideals, over a period of time somehow lost their lustre. This trend was noticed in several countries. Analysing the reasons for their decline, he suggested that professional bodies have five attributes. They should understand comprehensively and sustain the current knowledge base its members should keep pace with emerging knowledge. The organisations representing different professions should become the authoritative voice on issues of national concern and importance. For example, the Institution of Engineers should provide views on the design and quality of structures to be put up for tsunami-hit people. The bodies should acquire interventional capabilities by studying different issues and problems concerning their respective professions. They should make their findings public and attract responses from the people concerned. Finally, they should reinforce ethical standards and values.
