SIRKAZHI: Most of the people evacuated a few days ago from about a dozen marooned villages near the banks of the Coleroon at the Sirkazhi and Kollidam blocks in the district have been returning to their villages since Friday morning, said J. Radhakrishnan, Collector, here on Friday. The Collector who is now camping at the Kollidam and Sirkazhi blocks and monitoring the flow in the Coleroon, told The Hindu that except people from a few villages such as Alakkudi, Vada Arangam, Nadhan Padugai and Mudalaimedu Thittu, who are accommodated in relief centres in Puthur and Kollidam areas, most of the evacuated had returned to their villages since early in the morning on Friday. All the affected families were provided relief assistance including rice, kerosene and Rs.2,000 cash, he said. Mr. Radhakrishnan said no loss of human life or cattle was reported from the marooning of the villages, thanks to the breach in Alakkudi on the Coleroon which was arrested immediately by thousands of sandbags kept ready. Similarly, samba paddy crop raised in the Kollidam and Sirkazhi blocks were saved by the timely closure of the major irrigation channels. The Collector said six teams, comprising revenue and development officials, had been formed to assess and distribute relief assistance to all the families in the flood-affected villages. Pollachi V. Jayaraman, Minister for Food and Co-operation, R. Vaidyalingam, Minister for Forests, and Radhakrishnan, Minister for Fisheries, visited flood-affected villages in the Sirkazhi and Kollidam blocks on Friday. The Ministers also visited relief centres where the evacuated people from several villages were accommodated and gave them relief assistance including rice, kerosene, mats, saris and dhoties. Mr. Jayaraman said special medical teams would be sent to the flood-affected villages to check the health of the people there and provide free medicines. He said electricity would be restored as soon as possible in the affected villages.
