BANGALORE: Holder Vijaya Bank had to quell a fighting Jayanagar SC (JSC) in the second session to register an 84-53 win in the semifinal league of the Association Cup basketball tournament at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium indoor courts here on Thursday. The bankmen led 49-20 after the first two quarters. JSC, with the efforts of Anil Babu and junior international Kaushal, did make a recovery of sorts in the third quarter but failed to maintain the scoring tempo in the last quarter and the vastly experienced bankmen managed to freeze the ball effectively. The poor last quarter score of 12-9 in Vijaya Bank's favour tells its own tale of tight defence dominating with poor attempts from both sides. Banks' talented duo of Roshan and Ronnie spelt doom for JSC in the first session, with the tall Srinivasa Gowda providing the able foil. In the women's semifinal league match, last year's winner Sports Hostel (Mysore) overcame a stiff hurdle in the form of Vivek's SC, with consummate ease at 70-35, after leading 28-20 at half-time. The results: Men: Semifinal league: Vijaya Bank 84 (Roshan 14, Srinivasa Gowda 13, Ronnie 10) bt JSC 53 (Kaushal 10, Anil Babu 10). Quarterfinals: Vijay Bank 58 bt Orions SC 16; HAL 62 (Umashankar 26, Sachindra 11) bt BEML (Mysore) 51 (Ramakanth 21, P.J. Srinivas 10); MEG 75 (Manikandan 23, Tinu Joseph 20) bt ASC 47 (Rajesh 13, Jai rangan 13); JSC 73 (Kaushal 29, Darshan 21) bt Sports Hostel (Mysore) 61 (Varun 19, Jairaj 13). Women: Semifinal league: Sports Hostel (Mysore) 70 (K. Smitha 23, Kavitha 10) bt Viveks SC 35. Quarterfinals: Sports Hostel (Mysore) 42 (Sunitha 12) bt Mounts Club 25; IBBC 33 (Chitra Williams 12) bt Merchants (Davangere) 8; Vivek's SC 51 (Sushama 16, Reeth Kunjappa 16) bt Justice K.S.
