Letters to the Editor
In the article "Fusion to improve higher education" (Oct. 19), the author has rightly emphasised the need to increase interaction between universities and research institutions. Quality research comes from students pursuing science, not just from professionals assigned to do research. More funds, especially from the private sector, need to be pumped into the field.
Piyush Ostwal,
Adoption of universities by research institutes does not seem to be a good idea because they share an unequal relationship. The one-year secondment plan, on the other hand, is sure to motivate the academic staff who will get exposure to the latest in research. Staff at research institutions should also engage in teaching and research in universities, instead of expecting the universities to reach out to them.
The article says that separation of R&D from universities was a mistake. But fusion of industry and higher education is simply not feasible given the nature of our industry. Neither are our universities capable of utilising massive R&D funding, without adequate labs and qualified researchers. All science graduates should be made to teach in schools for at least one year, and we should go for massive funding for practical labs in schools.
Dhirendra Sharma,
