Letters to the Editor
The release of Vijay Prakash, the RJD candidate arrested under non-bailable Sections of the Indian Penal Code in Bihar, is a shame on the law-enforcement agencies of the State. In such a situation of utter lawlessness, how much order can the Election Commission alone ensure? There is no point in the Bihar Government spending huge sums of taxpayers' money on law-enforcement agencies and infrastructure when they have been rendered almost defunct.
L.R. Moorthy,
The article "Election Commission must be a fair umpire" (Oct. 18) was a timely warning. Any effort by any institution meant to strengthen democracy must be resisted! The fact that only 43 per cent of Bihar's 1.23 crore voters turned up at the polls cannot be only because people are fed up with politicians. There should be more such responsible articles explaining the phenomenon.
