BJP elated over victory

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on Saturday elated at its victory in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections.

At a media briefing here, party spokesman Prakash Javdekar said the party secured three-fourths of the seats in the Corporation despite the "negative campaign of the Congress."

That the people of Ahmedabad voted the BJP in with such a majority three years after the Assembly elections was, according to Mr. Javdekar, testimony to their faith in the party. The BJP was successful in fighting the anti-incumbency factor because of the development projects taken up by the State Government. Also, he highlighted the good performance by the party in BJP president L.K. Advani's Lok Sabha constituency.

Criticising the Congress and other Opposition parties for carrying out a "communal and negative campaign," Mr. Javdekar said the BJP fought the elections on the plank of development. He also sought to underscore the party's good showing in the local government elections in Kerala, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
