Indian resolution adopted at UNESCO meet

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: India's resolution seeking the pro-active involvement of the UNESCO in the discussions of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) for protection of the rights of broadcasting organisations was unanimously adopted with a minor amendment by member-countries at the agency's ongoing General Conference in Paris.

The resolution was supported by a majority of the countries despite resistance from the developed nations. India contended that the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation should ensure that its objectives of protection of the freedom of expression and universal access to information and knowledge were not hindered by the WIPO Treaty provisions.

On Friday, India was re-elected to the UNESCO executive board by 145 votes.
