Second round of panchayat polls ends peacefully in U.P.

Death toll in first round of voting goes up to four

LUCKNOW: An estimated 60 to 65 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the second round of the first phase of panchayat polls in 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

``There is no report of any untoward incident from any part of the State where polling was held today,'' a home department spokesman said here.

Polling for 120 zila panchayat and 2899 kshetra panchayat members were held in 50 development blocks of the State, election office sources said.

Group clash

Meanwhile, in Ballia where polling was held yesterday, 15 people, including four women were injured in a group clash in Naghar village over local poll rivalry.

One person with bullet injuries was referred to Varanasi while five others were admitted to the district hospital and nine were undergoing treatment at primary health centre.

The second phase of the zila and kshetra panchayat elections will be held on October 17 and 20.

Toll rises to four

Meanwhile, the toll in election related violence has gone up to four with police today saying that two brothers have been shot dead near Hapur, even as repolling has been ordered at dozens of polling stations.

Sandeep Tyagi (28) and Yogender Tyagi (22) were shot dead on Friday at Bajhilpur village near Hapur in an election-related rivalry, police said in Ghaziabad.

Official sources had yesterday said that one person was killed in Banni Thera village in Muzaffarnagar and another in Laxapur village in Bhadohi during first round of panchayat elections.

A report from Etah said repolling has been ordered at two dozen polling stations in the district where booth capturing and snatching of ballot boxes occured.

In Muzaffarnagar, repolling has been ordered at six polling centres, official sources said. The repolling would be held on Monday. — PTI
