NEW DELHI: Former Lok Sabha Speaker and All India Trinamool Congress leader P.A. Sangma on Monday resigned from the 14th Lok Sabha. He represents the Tura Parliamentary constituency in Meghalaya. Mr. Sangma met the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee and submitted his resignation, which "is under consideration", sources in the Speaker's office said. Mr. Sangma had taken the decision in support of the Garo Hills' struggle and to protest against the "oppression and atrocities on the masses seeking justice.'' Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party praised Mr. Sangma for "his sacrifice'' and said it signified the "highest moral tradition of Indian democratic polity.'' The NCP general secretary, D.P. Tripathi, said Mr. Sangma was likely to be re-admitted into the party.
