AMU panel warns of nationwide stir

NEW DELHI: The Aligarh Muslim University Action Committee will launch a nationwide agitation if the Centre fails to challenge the Allahabad High Court verdict quashing the minority status of the 130-year-old institution.

In a statement here on Wednesday, convener Z.K. Faizan said the judgment "will have far-reaching consequences'' and urged the Centre to challenge the verdict so that ``the university's sanctity and minority status are not altered.'' The court on Tuesday quashed the 1981 amendment to the AMU Act.

Mr. Faizan, who is in touch with Muslim leaders, said the verdict was ``violative of the fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution.'' — UNI
