Oil sector workers to join strike
Special Correspondent
KOCHI:
Workers in the oil sector will join the nationwide strike on September 29 as per the decision of the committee of public sector trade unions.
The strike is in protest against the policies pursued by the Union Government in different sectors and to rectify the same.
The move of the Government to disinvest the shares of many profit-making public sector companies had invited widespread protests recently. Because of this the Government had temporarily shelved the idea to disinvest the shares of BHEL and 13 others. But even now the proposal to divest the shares of another 22 companies is pending with the Government, said B. Balgopalan, general secretary and coordinator of the National United Forum of Oil and Petroleum Workers, Kerala chapter, in a statement on Monday.
Removal of the bonus ceiling by amending the Bonus Act, raising the interest rates on EPF, GPF and PPF, scrapping the new pension system and restoring the pre-2004 pension scheme, ensuring right to strike through legislative measures, reviving sick PSUs and ensuring social security for unorganised sector workers and agricultural workers against downsizing of the strength of the work force.
