MEG squeezes past Sports Hostel

Sports Reporter

BANGALORE: Madras Engineering Group & Centre (MEG) looked rusty and weary after its tough encounter against ASC on Sunday evening, but managed to scrape through 73-72 in a tense and thrilling match against Sports Hostel (Bangalore) on the fourth day of the Senior Division basketball league at the Sree Kanteerava stadium courts here on Monday.

With Tinu Joseph and Sweeto Francis missing baskets from close quarters, it was left to Manikandan to get into the scoring act and the stocky ball handler did not disappoint.

However, it was the young Srinivas Naik, a junior international, who stole the thunder with some uncanny shooting. Naik led Hostel's recovery in the second and third quarters and it even enjoyed a slender advantage.

Trailing 17-18 at the end of the first quarter, Hostel pegged away in the second and third to be up 20-17 and 18-17 (55-52), with 10 to go. The Army boys, however, kept their cool to prevail in the end.

HAL, KSP keep winning

HAL and KSP too maintained their winning form. HAL downed a lacklustre Beagles, which was hampered by Puneet's absence for most part of the first half, 85-61 and KSP was well served by Anil S. Bani (21) and Suban (13) en route to a 63-37 verdict over NAL Colony.

For NAL, Venkat was once again off-colour and it was left to Sandeep to carry the fight ahead.

Puneet, having to do duty for his College in a tournament, came in late and could not provide the fireworks he came up with on Sunday evening.

In the other matches, Vijaya Bank had no problems against SAI (Dharwad) and won 77-42, while ASC recorded its first win in the league, a hard-fought 55-51 decision against JSC.

The results:

KSP 63 (Anil S. Bani 21, Suban 13) bt NAL Colony 37; HAL 85 (Yasin 21, Rajkumar 20, Umashankar 20) bt Beagles 61 (Vishveshwar 16, Anirudh 14, Bharath 13, Puneet 10).

MEG 73 (Manikandan 22, Sweeto Francis 18) bt Sports Hostel (Bangalore) 72 (Srinivas Naik 33); Vijaya Bank 77 (Srinivasa Gowda 21, Roshan 12) bt Sai (Dharwad) 42 (Naresh P. 16, Naveen Prakash 11).

ASC 55 (Jay Ranga 18, Mathew 15, Dharampal 14) bt JSC 51 (Charan 16, Kaushal 12).

VSC beats BEML

Vasu Sports Club (Hubli) beat Bharat Earth Movers Limited (Bangalore) 5-1 in the `B' division league hockey tournament at the KSHA stadium here on Monday. BEML's Diwakar scored the first goal in the ninth minute but after that Vasu Sports Club rattled up five goals. Sunil Jadhav scored twice (10th and 58th). Balraj (16th), Parsuram (18th, pc) and Sushil Kumar (20th) were the scorers for the winner. — Sports Reporter
