Vallathol Award

for MT

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vallathol Sahithya Samithi has selected noted writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair for the Vallathol Award for the year. The award, which consists of a cash prize of Rs. 1,11,111 and a plaque, will be presented during the Sahitheeyotsavam being organised in connection with the poet's birth anniversary here on October 16. This was announced by president of the Samithi R. Ramachandran Nair, on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

Curbs on import

of copra

KOCHI: The Union Government has brought down the preferential margin of desiccated coconut import from Sri Lanka under Bangkok Agreement of MFN (most favoured nation) to 14 per cent. The effective duty on imported desiccated coconut has been raised from the existing 30 per cent to 60.2 per cent. The import of poor quality desiccated coconut in large quantities was adversely affecting the domestic industry. The measures taken by the Ministry of Commerce will help to protect the interests of the domestic desiccated coconut manufacturers, according a press release issued by the Coconut Development Board. — Staff Reporter

Gramin Bank

staff to join stir

KANNUR: Employees of Gramin Bank will participate in the banking strike called by the Sponsoring Committee of all Central trade unions. All Kerala Gramin Bank Staff Federation general secretary C.C. Premaraj said in a press release that officers and employees of the North Malabar Gramin Bank and South Malabar Gramin Bank would participate in the strike since the issues being raised by the strike touched bank employees, including those in gramin banks all over the country. — Staff Reporter

Brahmana Samajam stand on polls

KOLLAM: The general body meetings of the Kollam Brahmana Samajam and the women's unit of the Kerala Brahmana Sabha held here have taken a decision to adopt a stand for the local body elections. As per the decision, members have been advised to cast their votes for those candidates who stand for protecting the interests of the Brahmins and the majority community, says a statement issued by the general secretary of the samajam K.N. Ramakrishnan. The samajam general body meeting was presided over by the president V. Balachandran, and the meeting of the women's wing was presided over by its president C. Rajalakshmi Sundaram. — Staff Reporter

Railway gates to remain closed

KOLLAM: The Railway authorities here on Tuesday said that level-crossing number 61 (Mynagapally), between Sasthamkotta and Karunagapally railway stations, would remain closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 21. The closure is for facilitating repair work on that section. — Staff Reporter

Kathakali maestros to be felicitated

Thrissur: Kathakali maestros Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, Kavungal Chathunni Panicker, Kalalamadalam Ramankutty Nair, Kottakkal Krishnankutty Nair, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair and master percussionist Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval will be felicitated at a function being organised here on September 24 by the Thrissur Kathakali Club. The meeting will be followed by an all-night Kathakali show featuring the plays `Santhanagopalam,' 'Balivijayam' and 'Bakavadhom.' — Staff Reporter

Man held

THRISSUR: The police have arrested a 35-year old man in connection with several cases of motorbike theft in different parts of the district. The police gave his name as Thekkemadham Venugopal, of Kidangur, near Kottayam. The police said he was arrested from the Veliyannur area when he was allegedly moving around on a stolen bike. — Staff Reporter
