State Government recognises Sezhian's contribution to progress of Tamil society

CHENNAI: "It has been my firm view that it is not desirable for the State to confer titles or awards. In fact, titles conferred by the British during the days of the Raj were anathema to freedom fighters. Still I thank the Government as I consider this award a recognition for service to the cause of social justice," said Era Sezhian, veteran Parliamentarian, who has been chosen for the State Government's `Thanthai Periyar Award for Social Justice' for this year.

The "unexpected news" of the Government's decision reached him on Saturday when he was attending a function in Chennai to mark the birth anniversary of E.V. Ramasamy, founder of the Dravidar Kazhagam.

The award, named after Periyar and instituted in 1994 to honour those who struggled for social justice, is given to a person selected by the Chief Minister. It consists of a gold medal and Rs. 1 lakh in cash.

Many laurels

Mr. Sezhian has won many laurels during the five decades of his political career. As a founder member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1949 and the Janata Party in 1977, he occupied many important posts in both parties.

He also held key positions in the Janata Dal and Lok Sakthi.

During his Parliamentary career, spanning 22 years beginning 1962, he played an active role in both Houses of Parliament.

He retired from politics in 2001 and heads public institutions such as the Periyar Culture Club, Humanist Friends Forum and Voters Awareness Campaign, Chennai.

The Government chose Mr. Sezhian to recognise his contribution to the progress of Tamil society by propagating rationalism, opposing obscurantism and creating social awareness.

Strong foundation

"It is true that Tamil Nadu has been the pioneer in the struggle for social justice. Though the State has achieved many successes in the struggle for social justice, thanks to the strong foundation laid by leaders, including Periyar, Anna and Kamaraj, it has miles to go.

The struggle will continue till all forms of socio-economic discriminations are ended," Mr. Sezhian says.
