CHENNAI: Vice-Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Bhupender Singh Thakur on Saturday urged the young men and women officers of the Army to prepare themselves to face the challenges posed by terrorists. He asked them to be determined to tackle the menace caused by insurgents in the Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Addressing a passing-out parade at the Officers Training Academy, he said the whole world had appreciated India for its commitment to root out terrorism. The role of the young officers would be more important now than ever before, considering the changing security environment. Pointing out that the external threat had acquired a new dimension through global terrorism, he said there were threats of bio and nuclear terrorism. The combination of sophisticated technology, communication, instant banking system and religious fundamentalism had made terrorist attacks an act of war against society. He asked the new officers to be updated with the current trends in science and technology and the latest military and political developments. "You should also provide succour to those hit by natural calamities," he said. More than 300 cadets, both men and women, were inducted into the Army as officers. Vijayendra Singh Yadav won the sword of honour and gold medal for the best all round gentleman cadet.
