Neurology camps

MALAPPURAM: The charity hospital of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala will organise free neurology camps for the poor on the third Sunday of every month. S. Ram Manohar, chief neurologist from P.V.S. Hospital, will lead the camps. Managing trustee and chief physician of Arya Vaidya Sala, Aryavaidyan P.K. Warrier, will inaugurate the camp at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Boat race today

PONNANI: The annual boat race in Biyyam Lake will take place here on Friday. About a dozen boats representing various clubs in and around Ponnani will take part in the race, according to the organisers. — Staff Reporter


KOZHIKODE: The panchayat-level `Vijnanolsavom' (knowledge festival) to be organised by the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad in association with Directorate of Public Instructions (DPI) will be held on October 1. Those who have been selected from the school-level `Vijnanolsavom' are participating in the panchayat-level `Vijnanolsavom.' Those students who are participating in the panchayat-level contests should come up with a project. Last date extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last date for applying for the six-month-long continuing education certificate course conducted by the State Resources Centre, Kerala, has been extended till September 30, according to a press release. Teachers on the warpath

MALAPPURAM: Candidates for English teacher posts in high schools across the State are on the warpath in protest against the failure of the Education Department to report the number of vacancies. They have formed an association named All Kerala HSA (high school assistant) English Candidates Forum, and called for a State-wide meeting in Kochi on Saturday.

Fellowship for percussionist

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Ministry of Culture has awarded its senior fellowship to Mridangom artiste P. S. Venugopal for a period of two years with effect from September 1 this year. The fellowship carries a monthly purse of Rs. 12,000. — Special Correspondent

Probe sought

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Gazetted Officers' Association (KGOA) has sought a vigilance inquiry into the Finance Department's decision to provide accident insurance coverage to the Government employees through a company that had not quoted the lowest amount as the insurance premium. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the KGOA said the proposal was to deduct the premium amount from the monthly salary of each employee. The Principal Secretary for Finance had convened a meeting with the employees' organisations on September 9 to discuss the proposal. The information given at this meeting was that the lowest monthly premium of Rs.15 for a policy for Rs.1 lakh was quoted by the United India Insurance Company. The KGOA said that it had learned from subsequent inquiries that the National Insurance Company had offered to provide the same insurance coverage to the employees on payment of a monthly premium of Rs. 10 for a policy for Rs. 1 lakh. — Special Correspondent
