HUBLI: The Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Hubli, will celebrate its platinum jubilee on Monday.

Established in 1928, the chamber has been engaging itself in various social activities apart from that of trade and commerce and has even taken to the path of agitation for social causes. It has also taken part in the movement for unification of Karnataka.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh will participate in its platinum jubilee Function.

The founder of the association, the late Murugaiah Swami Jungin, had named it "Karnataka Vanika Sangha." The association took its birth in Bagalkot and later shifted base to Hubli. It was on March 2, 1969 that the own building of the association was inaugurated by the then President of the All India National Congress S. Apart from organising seminars and workshops related to trade and commerce, the chamber has involved itself in the agitation for High Court Bench, Karwar Port, Gadag-Bijapur Guage Conversion, Airport and other issues. The chamber, which celebrated its silver jubilee in 1957, golden jubilee in 1979 and diamond jubilee in 1991, has the credit of training of about 8,000 candidates in matters relating to accounts and tax.

The chamber has set up Hubli-Dharwad Stock Trading House and Karnataka Material Testing Research Centre and has opened an Export Promotion Cell on its premises. At present, the KCCI has around 3,000 members across the State and 110 associations and organisations have its affiliation.

On its Platinum Jubilee year, the chamber plans to establish a permanent exhibition ground on the lines of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.
