Nurture science talents, schools told

BANGALORE: THE 33RD Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition was held at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, DRDO Complex on August 18 and August 19.

As many as 43 Kendriya Vidyalayas of Bangalore region participated. The themes were environmental change, industrial as well as rural development and math models.

Chitra Gurumurthy, Assistant Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghathan (KVS), who was the chief guest at the inaugural function, said science is a way of organised life and without science there is no organisation.

K. Ramachandra, Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), who was the guest of honour, called upon schools to nurture science talents. He regretted that the present generation of students is showing less interest in basic sciences.

"This problem can be addressed only by developing scientific aptitude and skill," he said.

S.D. Chakraborthy, Education Officer, Bangalore KVS, said science being the truth, is eternal and basic science is the mother of all sciences.

Principal of the school S. Sitalakshmi said science exhibition is one of the avenues for students to display their innovative and creative talents.

Grandparents' Day

VAGDEVI VILAS School, Marathahalli, held its unique annual event, Grandparents' Day, over two days.

The programmes were attended by proud and happy grandparents of the students.

The chief guests on these two days were Mudambadithya and Vishnukant S. Chatapalli, who showered praises for the initiative taken by the school to honour the older generation. A variety entertainment programme with an all-embracing theme of the importance of grandparents in the lives of young children was presented by the school's students.

The celebrations ended with a wide range of entertaining games for both grandmothers and grandfathers who were thrilled to be later awarded prizes.

Anveshan 2005

Anveshan 2005, an interschool art, literary and cultural festival, was held at MES Kishora Kendra, Malleswaram, on August 20 and August 21.

Anveshan is an annual event conducted by Kishora Smriti, alumni association of the school.

R. Rajan, international basketball player and senior manager (public relations), HAL was the chief guest at the valedictory function.

B.R. Seshadri Iyengar, honorary secretary of Mysore Education Society, said the school would celebrate its silver jubilee this year. Anveshan (the search), which started in 1996, had only one event then but this year there were 10 events.

A new event, Chitra-Kosha Anveshan (Potpourri), was introduced this year. Over 40 schools participated and VVS Sardar Patel School, Rajajinagar, emerged the winner in four events and walked away with the rolling shield.

Investiture ceremony

DVV GUJARATI Shala, Majestic Circle, conducted the investiture ceremony for the students of 2005-06. It was a much-awaited day filled with the essence of leadership when selected students were to begin shouldering serious responsibilities.

Bhavika Jain began the ceremony with an invocation and the Principal, Shaila Prasad, welcomed the chief guest, the former Chief Justice of India, M.N. Venkatachaliah. Members of the school managing committee were present.

Among the student office-bearers are: (high school) student secretary for boys Hitesh N. Jain; student secretary for girls Bhavika I.; sports secretary for boys Rahul R. Goswami; sports secretary for girls Vanmala Sharma; library captain for boys Harsh N. Patel; library captain for girls Pooja H.; English club coordinator Soumya M.C.; quiz club Rahul A. Shah; eco club Fluzia K. Kohkar; and computer club Kartik K. Makadia.

Higher primary school: student secretaries Deepak V. Mali and Moonica K.; sports secretaries Harsh V. Parekh and Shruti A.
