NEW DELHI: National champion Sanaa Bhambri cruised into the singles semifinals at the ITF women's tennis tournament in London on Friday. The 17-year-old Delhi girl won the first set 6-0 after which her opponent Paula Marama of New Zealand retired. The top-seeded Bhambri sisters got a walkover in the doubles semifinals as well as the Kiwi was part of the opposition, seeded third in partnership with Anna Hawkins of Britain. The Bhambri sisters had earlier beaten Birgit Ritschka of Austria and Radhika Tulpule 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The elder of the Bhambri sisters, Ankita went down 1-6, 4-6 to the third-seeded Ekaterina Kozhokhina of Russia in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi lost 7-6, 3-6, 5-7 in the quarterfinals to fifth-seeded Julie Coin of France. The Indian Oil officer from Chennai had beaten Laura Peterzan of Britain 6-3, 7-6(9) in the second round. In doubles, the second-seeded Rushmi and Svenja Weidemann of Germany beat Anna De Bruyn of South Africa and Branka Savic of Australia 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Mankad crashes out
In the $50,000 Challenger in Binghamton, New York, Davis Cupper Harsh Mankad missed matchpoints on way to a 7-5, 6-7(10), 0-6 defeat against the the 153rd ranked second seed Andy Murray of Britain in the pre-quarterfinals. In the second leg of the Chinese Satellite at Tianjin, Kamala Kannan made the doubles final with Patrick Briaud of the U.S. The Indo-US combination beat Zhe Li and Wang Yu jr. of China 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the $10,000 Futures tournament in Semarang, Indonesia, Pathanjali Ravishankar lost 6-7(4), 2-6 to the fifth-seeded Dong-Hyun Kim of Korea in the pre-quarterfinals. He was the only Indian among five to win a round in singles or doubles.
