VISAKHAPATNAM: The appointment of one of the senior-most members of the Congress in the city Yandrapu Mariyadas as general secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee was hailed by the party cadres here on Wednesday. He is the only person holding the post in the three north Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, according to reports reaching here. For one who joined the party in 1965 and served as joint secretary of the then Town Congress, Mr. Mariyadas became a councillor of the Visakhapatnam Municipality in 1968 and also served as corporator, Standing Committee Chairman and co-opted member of the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam during the last couple of decades. He has the distinction of being president of the City Congress Committee for over 13 years from 1988. A technocrat, he was particularly keen in the water supply network and raised several issues in the corporation for augmenting drinking water supply to the fast growing city of VisakhapatnamMr. Mariyadas thanked the Rajya Sabha member T. Subbarami Reddy, Visakhapatnam MP N. Janardhana Reddy, MLA S. Ranga Raju, and APCC president K. Keshava Rao for nominating him to the post.
