Police, naxals exchange fire

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: An exchange of fire took place between Maoists and the police at Nerella Banda in G.K. Veedhi mandal of the district on Wednesday evening around 6 p.m.

However, there were no casualties.

As part of observing Martyrs Week from July 28, the naxalites attempted to unveil a memorial at the place on the day. There was a small gathering and meanwhile, a police party reached there.

The naxalites began firing at the police and when the latter retaliated, the extremists escaped using the human shield--under the cover of the people present there--according to a police spokesman.
