Nature's fury

Mumbai, the country's commercial capital, has borne the brunt of nature's fury.

The unprecedented rain paralysed vehicular traffic and put thousands of people to great hardship — stranded office workers had to walk for miles through chest-high water after spending the night in their offices or on railway platforms.

But, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Several men and women came forward to offer food and help to the hundreds trekking home wearily. Humaneness does come to the fore in times of need.

The unprecedented rain has thrown up a serious challenge. The need of the hour is to review existing rules and ensure a proper drainage system for cities and towns.

K. Murlidar,
Chennai
