Move to meet judges on judicial reform

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: E.M. Sudarshana Natchiappan, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Grievances and Law and Justice, on Sunday said the committee had sought permission from Bhairon Singh Shekawat, Vice-President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, to hold a discussion with Supreme Court judges before making its recommendations on judicial reforms.

Speaking at the first anniversary celebration of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court here, he said, "On the reforms issue, we would like to get firsthand information from the sitting judges."

Though the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, was happy over the proposal to interact with the committee, the Vice-President's permission had been sought in order to avoid any controversy, he added.

Pointing out that the judiciary was not being given enough financial assistance in the budget, he said, "When all other departments in the country were directly making their demand for the annual budget, why should the judiciary be represented by an executive officer? On the lines of the American and British system, we have recommended that a committee of judges propose their annual budget and place it before the Finance Ministry."
