A bold statement: Muslim leaders

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Prominent Muslim organisations and leaders on Thursday hailed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement in the U.S. that not even one Muslim out of 15 crores in India was involved with any terrorist organisation such as Al-Qaeda.

"It is felt that only a person of Dr. Singh's stature can make such a bold statement. It has evoked overwhelming appreciation and gratification among Indian Muslims," they said in a statement here.

They assured the Prime Minister that under no circumstances would the integrity, unity, peace and harmony of the country be allowed to be jeopardised by any act of terrorism. "Islam is totally against the killings of innocent people and we strongly condemn the terrorism of all kinds all over the world."

The statement was issued by Kamal Faruqui, member, Muslim Personal Law Board; Maulana Mohd. Wali Rehmain, secretary, Muslim Personal Law Board; Dr. Fakruddin Mohammad, secretary, MESO, Hyderabad; P.A. Inamdar, an educationist from Pune; Maulana Abdul Wahab Khilji, executive committee member of the Muslim Personal Law Board, and Maulana Asrarul Haq Qasmi, chairman, Milli Talimi Foundation.
