Women bag a quarter of ICAR awards

50 agriculture scientists and research institutions honoured

NEW DELHI: Women agriculture scientists have cornered 30 per cent of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) awards. More than 50 awards in 12 categories were given on Saturday to meritorious agriculture scientists and research institutions. The awards were given in cotton research, hybrid rice, floriculture, seed production, vegetable production, diversified agriculture and resource management.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar gave away the prizes here in the presence of Director-General of ICAR Mangala Rai and senior officials, scientists and farmers. The Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award went to the Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Mumbai, for best performance in agricultural research, extension and education. The award carrying Rs. 1 lakh was given to CIRCOT for developing technologies in textile processing, by products and waste utilisation and transferring them to appropriate user groups.

The Swami Sahajanand Saraswati extension scientist/worker award for the biennium 2003-2004 was conferred on Ravindra Kumar Sohane of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Beguserai, Bihar; S C Pramanik of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, CARI, Port Blair; and P. Anitha Kumari for extension work in resource management.

Chandrashekhar Bhadsavle and Vinayak Bari of Maharashtra and Ashish Sarkar of West Bengal were awarded the Jagjivan Ram Kisan Puraskar 2004 for innovative farming practices and for providing leadership to the farming community within their vicinity.

The N. G. Ranga Farmer Award for diversified agriculture 2004 was given to Nand Kishore Jaisalmeria of village Manaklao in Jodhpur (Rajasthan). Mr Jaisalmeria, with the help of the Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Jodhpur, took up "ber" fruit based diversified farming. He evolved the technique of water conservation which substantially enhanced planned growth and food production. His success attracted the attention of farmers in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. From a modest beginning of 4075 "ber" seedlings in 1979, the output of the nursery reached one lakh in 1988. His efforts resulted in the recognition of Jodhpur as the "Ber capital of India."

The Chaudhary Devi Lal Outstanding All India Co-ordinated Research Project Award 2004 carrying a Rs. 1 lakh cash prize was given to Long-Term Fertilizer experiment (LTF), Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Awards for outstanding postgraduate agricultural research was given to 18 scientists in the disciplines of crop improvement by-technology, plant protection, horticulture, animal sciences and fisheries. The Chaudhary Charan Singh Award for excellence in journalism in agricultural research and development was given to the chief of bureau of Jansatta, Anil Bansal, for his contribution towards dissemination of agriculture related information through the print and electronic media.

The Panjab Rao Deshmukh Woman Agricultural Scientist Award was conferred on Sujata of the Directorate of Oilseed Research, Hyderabad; A. A. Sherikar of the Mumbai Veterinary College; and G. Taru Sharma of the Indian Veterinary Institute, Izatnagar. The Rs. 50,000 award is given for outstanding contribution of applied and basic nature in their respective fields.

The Vasantrao Naik Award for research applications in dry land agriculture carrying a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh was given to Gouranga Kar and Associates of Water Technology Centre for Eastern Region (WTCER), Bhubaneshwar. The annual award is given for outstanding contributions in water conservation and dry land farming.
