Letters to the Editor
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's statement that conscience is a ledger in which offences are booked and registered (July 7) calls for serious introspection. Corruption is a painful reality and has become a way of life in India affecting all walks of life. The microscopic minority of upright officials remain silent spectators. It is futile to expect utopian uprightness in a society so steeped in corruption.
A.R.K. Pillai,
* * * The President has correctly pointed out that religion has not been effective in evoking people's conscience. So we have to seek a non-religious solution to corruption. The root cause of corruption is inequitable distribution of wealth. An egalitarian economic order must be established.
K.S.S. Sharma,
