Challenge to democracy

The fatwa dissolving the marriage of Imrana, allegedly raped by her father-in-law, is a challenge to democracy. Such obscurantism is against the constitutional rights of the people. Parliament should pass a law giving the judiciary the power to declare any interpretation arising out of scriptures, practices or customs that is repugnant to the Constitution void.

Now comes news of another Muslim woman from Assam, directed by the local Jamait to divorce her husband after she complained that she was raped by her father-in-law. We do not know how many more will follow. One thing is certain: such `fatwas' will render many women and children destitute.

Imrana alleged she was raped, and a fatwa was issued. The media went to town, creating a nationwide controversy. In the process, the unfortunate woman went through one of the most unsavoury media trials ever. Now some sections of the media are quoting a Muslim body as saying Imrana was not raped, she was only molested. Unfortunately, the media are increasingly becoming a forum for peddling hearsay, gossip and rumours.
