NC(I)'s students' wing on the warpath

Call for education bandh on July 11, stir to be intensified

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KSU (I), students' wing of the National Congress (Indira), will observe an education bandh on July 11 in protest against the State Government reneging on their assurances to the students' organisations on the issue of fee structure in the self-financing medical colleges run by Government agencies.

The organisation plans to obstruct the ongoing centralised allotment process and boycott the public functions of the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Minister for Education E.T. Mohammed Basheer, said A.R. Nishad, State president of the students' wing.

Within 48 hours of the talks that Mr. Basheer had with the students' organisations, the Government resorted to a volte-face.

The KSU (Indira) alleged that this was done at the behest of private managements.

The announcement made by the managements of self-financing colleges that they would provide scholarships to students from the economically weaker sections was an "eyewash," Mr. Nishad said.

The scholarship scheme announced by it was also unclear, he added.
