Russia takes lead

MOSCOW: Russia's Anastasia Myskina battled from a set down to put the reigning Fed Cup champion Russia 1-0 up in the semifinal tie against the United States with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Wimbledon champion Venus Williams here on Saturday.

``I felt slightly nervous in the opening set as I was playing against the Wimbledon champion in the first rubber of the tie,'' Myskina said after the match.

Czech Republic levels

The Czech Republic and Italy were tied 1-1 after Saturday's opening singles matches of their World Group I play-off tie.

Italy led after No. 1 Francesca Schiavone defeated Kveta Peschke 6-4, 7-5 in 1 hour, 29 min. on carpet at the indoor Liberec Arena.

Austria in lead

Austria took a 1-0 lead over Switzerland in the play-off on Saturday after Yvonne Meusburger defeated 15-year-old Stefanie Voegele 7-6(4), 6-1.

The results: Semifinals: Russia 1 United States 0 (Anastasia Myskina bt Venus Williams 5-7, 6-4, 6-2).

Play-offs (World Group I): Czech Republic 1, Italy 1 (Francesca Schiavone (Ita) bt Kveta Peschke (Cze) 6-4, 7-5; Nicole Vaidisova (Cze) bt Roberta Vinci (Ita) 6-3, 6-4).
