GERARDMER (FRANCE): Lance Armstrong kept the overall lead at the Tour de France despite some fierce attacks from his rivals on Saturday as the race hit its hardest mountain climb so far.

Pieter Weening of the Rabobank team won the eighth stage in a sprint against Andreas Kloeden, last year's Tour runner-up.

Armstrong faced strong attacks from Kloeden and his T-Mobile teammates on the day's final climb, but managed to keep his overall lead heading into Sunday's ninth stage of the three-week race. — AP
